If I have a current out-of-state license, do I need to take a complete Prelicensing
course?
This will vary by state. Go to the individual State Insurance Department for
information on current out-of-state licenses. For example in California, if
the student holds a current license that required at least 40 hours of either
life or property/casualty, it would not be required to complete another 40 hours
in California. However, the student must take an additional 12 hours of Code
and Ethics.
If I have a designation such as CPCU, do I need to complete the Prelicensing
course to get my State Insurance License?
This will vary by state. Go to the individual State Insurance Department for
information on credit for professional designations.
For example in California, if you have a CPCU, AAI, CIC, CLU or a LUTCF designation,
then you only need to complete 12 hours of formal classroom study for Code and
Ethics. However, you would have to take the exam for the entire 32 or 52 hours
of subject content. However, it may be beneficial for you to complete the entire
course since you may not be completely familiar with some of the questions that
were developed from that portion of the course content that didn't include Code
& Ethics. Arizona residents do not receive exam credit for any professional
designations that they may hold. Texas residents do not receive exam credit
for any professional designations that they may hold.
I already have a life license. Do I need to take Code and Ethics again to

If you already have a license in either Life or Fire and Casualty, you do not
have to take Code and Ethics again in order to acquire the other license. However,
the Code and Ethics questions for each license type are different. It may be
beneficial for a student to complete the course.
