Broker-Agent Prelicensing Frequently Asked Questions
Students must complete 52 hours of prelicensing education to obtain the Fire & Casualty or Life & Disability License in California. For the following licenses, 32 hours of instruction is required: Personal Lines, Limited Lines Auto, Accident and Health and Life only. The California Department of Insurance (CDI) now has an Online System called FLASH that lets you complete your Licensing Application and sign up for an Examination Date at the same time. Can I take the Prelicensing class by self-study?
Yes. Effective January 1, 2007 the State of California allows online self-study courses. IEA's 52 hour course has met with great user acceptance and our 32 hour Personal Lines course will be launched in January 2008. .
Where do I get my application for a California Insurance License?
The California Department of Insurance now has a new "Flash Fast Licensing

If I have a current out-of-state license, do I need to take a complete Prelicensing course?
If the state in which a student holds a current license required them to take at least 40 hours of either life or property/casualty they will not be required to complete 52 hours in California. However, they must take 12 hours of Code and Ethics.
If I have a designation such as CPCU, do I need to complete the Prelicensing course to get my California Insurance License?
If you have a CPCU, AAI, CIC, CLU or a LUTCF designation, then you need only complete 12 hours of Code and Ethics.
I already have a life license. Do I need to take Code and Ethics again to
get a Fire and Casualty License in California?
If you already have a license in either Life or Fire and Casualty, you do not
have to take Code and Ethics again in order to acquire the other license. However,
the Code and Ethics questions for each license type are different. It may be
beneficial for a student to complete the course.
