Associate in Personal Insurance (API)
An Educational Program for Personal Insurance Specialists
Developed by the Insurance Institute of America, the API program provides a thorough understanding of the insurance business, personal insurance coverages, personal insurance underwriting and marketing practices, and the personal insurance environment. It is unique in its emphasis on the interaction between the product delivery team and the consumer.
Who Will Benefit
The API program is designed for personal insurance specialists who have basic insurance knowledge and are working as underwriters, customer service representatives, producers, or others in a personal lines environment.

- Substantial knowledge and understanding of personal property-liability insurance and a broad understanding of personal lines risk-selection techniques
- A heightened awareness of the reasons behind many personal lines underwriting and marketing practices

Earning the API Designation
To earn the API designation, you must successfully pass all four of the programs listed below. If you have completed other AICPCU programs such as INS or CPCU, consult the Insurance Institute of America regarding your requirements for this designatiion.
Course Sequence
Although there is no mandatory course sequence, we strongly recommend that students take the courses in the following order: INS 21, INS 22, API 28, and API 29. The study material for each course will presume that students have mastered the knowledge in any preceding course(s).
